The Annual Membership Drive
We have a simple message: dues are due.

Yes, friends, it’s that time of year again. Now I’m not referring to Christmas or New Year’s Day. And
no, I’m not referring to the fact that after December 21st the Dace become longer. No, my friends, I’m
referring to the fact that your dues payments to this illustrious organization are in fact due.

Thanks to your support, the BHFF has become one of the most effective conservation organizations
in South Dakota.  Think I’m kidding?  Those are the exact words used by GF&P fisheries chief Dennis
Unkenholz as he introduced members of the BHFF at a recent Game, Fish, & Parks Commission
meeting.

Thanks to a reliable fund raising mechanism (our annual auction), a large membership and solid
leadership, the BHFF has made a signifi cant difference in a number of fi sheries issues and projects.
These include:

  • Working to dedicate a small portion of Sheridan Lake for the benefit of the downstream fishery.
The BHFF has committed $20,000 towards Sheridan Lake.
  • Through Rapid City’s 2012 funds (and a $10,000 commitment by the BHFF) build a bypass
pipe around Canyon Lake. This could prevent the extremely high water temperatures
    sometimes seen below Canyon Lake.
  • Working to address didymosphenia geminata (Didymo), the nasty diatom that has invaded
Rapid Creek, and that appears to be responsible for the tremendous decline in the number of
brown trout. The BHFF has committed $10,000 towards a study that will take place during the
    summer of 2007.
  • Participating in the Spearfish Creek project that will essentially rebuild one of the major
impoundments in the canyon. The BHFF has committed $10,000 towards this project.

There are other things, including the sponsorship and funding of a youth program that is a
cooperative effort with the YMCA, and also a $30,000 commitment towards a habitat project in Pactola
Basin. Unfortunately, that project is temporarily on hold, due in large part to didymo.

In any case, dues are due, and we are asking for your continued support. We are the only
conservation organization that pays meaningful attention to the streams in the Black Hills, and your
support is vital.

As always, there are two categories:
  • Contributor - $35 or more. Entitles you to special benefits. Plus you get to drink more wine at
    BHFF meetings.
  • Regular - $20. You still get to drink wine.

Please pay your dues today. A return envelope is tucked away in this newsletter for your convenience.
