Spearfish Canyon Update
BHFF member Dan Landguth and Ron Koth of the SD Game, Fish, & Parks Department met with the
BHFF Board of Directors on 9/14/06 to discuss a project that will soon be started in Spearfish
Canyon. As many of you know, there is a concrete impoundment about halfway between Spearfish
and Cheyenne Crossing, and this impoundment is an ancient remnant of the “concrete
monolith” school of stream architecture.

When the project is completed, the dam will be substantially changed, and include a much more
natural appearance.  The power lines will be removed, silt will be excavated, and access will be
improved for disabled anglers. The current structure blocks all fish passage. The new design will allow
fish to move up and down the stream.

Although the bulk of this project has already been funded, the Board was advised that funding was
not quite adequate to complete the project. Dan Landguth is therefore pursuing additional fund-
raising to complete this project, with an objective of obtaining an additional $25,000.

There was little discussion, and the BHFF Board voted to contribute $10,000 to this project.
